The Institute for Financial Literacy Launches "Community Classroom" Program to Promote Financial Education in Maine

Interactive Seminars on Personal Finance Taught by Certified Educators and Open to the General Public

South Portland, ME – January 19, 2011 – The Institute for Financial Literacy, a national nonprofit whose mission is to make effective financial literacy education available for everyone, announced today that it has launched a community—based education program specifically designed for adults to improve financial literacy in Maine. The new program, called the Community Classroom, will include core classes in money management, credit and debt management, insurance and investing and family finances all taught by a Certified Educator in Personal Finance®. The Community Classroom, located at the Institute's new campus at 260 Western Avenue in South Portland, is open to the general public and will begin classes in February.

"The Community Classroom is an exciting new program offered by the Institute," said Leslie E. Linfield, Executive Director of the Institute for Financial Literacy. "We designed this program to equip Mainers to make better, more informed financial decisions based on proven concepts and practical guidelines geared toward knowledge retention and successful, real—world application."

Community Classroom seminars for the month of February include:

Money Management 101
Financial freedom starts here. Everything you always wanted to know about successful money management and more; including budgeting, net worth, financial planning and goal setting.
Wednesday, 2/2, 6:30 pm — 8:30 pm or Saturday, 2/5, 10:00 am — 12:00 pm

Credit & Debt Management
Stop the madness. Gain control over your credit and debt with proven tips to effectively manage credit, assess personal debt level and eliminate your debt once and for all.
Wednesday, 2/9, 6:30 pm — 8:30 pm or Saturday, 2/12, 10:00 am — 12:00 pm

Insurance & Investing Made Simple
The future is tomorrow, start planning today. Leverage the power of insurance and investing to help you reach your financial goals quicker and easier than imagined.
Wednesday, 2/16, 6:30 pm — 8:30 pm or Saturday, 2/19, 10:00 am — 12:00 pm

Family Finances
Family, Inc. Manage your family finances like a business, teach your children important financial literacy skills and gain valuable insight into important family decisions involving credit, debt, insurance and retirement planning.
Wednesday, 2/23, 6:30 pm — 8:30 pm or Saturday, 2/26, 10:00 am — 12:00 pm

Each two—hour seminar is designed as a stand alone course and can be taken in any order. The cost for each seminar is $50. Included in the cost of the class is a course textbook which includes a comprehensive set of financial planning tools and resources, as well as a self assessment designed to reinforce and support classroom discussion. Discounts are available for joint registrations or for a bundled package of classes.
